Where Business Analysis Ends and Solution Architecture Begins

A few years ago, I was brought into a large digital transformation project that had already kicked off. The business analyst had done great work gathering requirements, running workshops, and mapping out current processes. But when I asked where the architectural view was — how these requirements would actually integrate across platforms, scale over time, or even meet basic security standards — I was met with silence.

The BA had unknowingly stepped into solution design, and the delivery team was treating those diagrams as the blueprint. There was no architect involved yet. And the cracks were already showing: rework, misaligned expectations, and teams pulling in different directions.

That moment stuck with me. Because this happens more often than it should — especially in large-scale programs. When roles aren’t clear, delivery slows down, decisions get second-guessed, and technical debt piles up fast.
